Axis

The axis deer is considered to be the most beauteful deer, with its reddish coat with rows of white spots.  The axis was introduset in Texas in the 1930's from India.  The axis deer is now in 45 counties in Texas.  It's antlers are usually 3 pronged and curved.  The antlers are most often 20 inches.  Antlers that are 30 inches are considered excellent trophies.  If the antlers reach 36 inches they are an exceptional trophy.  The world record was in India and was 41 inches.  The males can weigh up to 200 pounds, and females up to 170 pounds.  You usually see axis females traveling with their offspring in small herds.  Rarely there will be a herd of axis male deer wandering together.  This breed is usually out during the day.  Most of their activity is hours after dawn and right before sunset.  Another feature of axis deer is that they do not follow a seasonal rut.  There are no restrictions on hunting axis deer in Texas.  The meat is tasty and does not have a lot of gamey flavor that venison often has.  Axis meat is 99.8% fat free.  It is the leanest meat of any mammal.
