The mule deer is a native species in Texas. It gets its name from its large, mule-like years. The most noticeable difference between mule deer and white-tail deer is the color of their tail and the shape of their antlers. The tip of the mule deer's tail is black, and the mule deer's antlers are forked. Each year, a buck's antlers will grow in the spring and fall off after mating season. The ears on the bucks are bigger than on the does. Instead of running, the mule deer moves by leaping, with all four feet coming down together. The mule deer is often 40-42 inches tall at the shoulder and are 80 inches from tip to tail. Adult bucks weigh between 150-300 pounds, and does are about 125-175 pounds. Trophy size mules deer may weigh up to 500 pounds!
